Nothing is Automatic: Everything is Grown (2023)

This print is a visual translation of a conversation I had with a patient while I was an artist in resident at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

She described her upbringing in Jamaica, planting potatoes with her family. The way they planted them with the branch of a tree in between red peas. Coming to England in the 60s, she noted how she was shocked by the fish and chip culture, whereby everything is ready automatically.

“Us, how rich in experience we were. We understood nothing is automatic, everything is grown. This is why I take friends to Brixton Market, to show them the best Indian vegetables, otherwise people only see them when prepared in restaurants without skins.”

This piece was selected to be part of the Soil, Toil & Table exhibition at the Lethaby Gallery Dec 2024- Jan 2025.
